00:02 Good day everyone.
00:15 My name is Mrs. Patience Okolo.
00:19 I am here to teach you government SS 3.
00:24 And the topic we have for today's lesson
00:27 is development of political parties in Nigeria.
00:30 And our soft topic for today
00:34 is People's Redemption Party PRP.
00:39 Nigeria Advanced Party NAP.
00:43 So let us see the lesson objectives.
00:45 At the end of today's lesson,
00:49 you should be able to state the formation
00:52 or origin of People's Redemption Party PRP.
00:57 Number two, you should be able to choice
01:00 organizational structure of the People's Redemption Party PRP.
01:05 Again, number three, you should be able to mention
01:09 sources of finance for the People's Redemption Party.
01:13 Another one, you should be able to state the aims
01:18 and objectives of the People's Redemption Party.
01:23 Again, you should be able to mention
01:25 the achievement of People's Redemption Party.
01:28 You should be able to choice the formation
01:31 of Nigeria Advanced Party.
01:33 You should be able to mention the organizational structure
01:36 of Nigeria Advanced Party.
01:39 You should be able to state the sources of finance
01:41 of Nigeria Advanced Party.
01:44 Then you should be able to mention the objectives,
01:46 aims and objectives of Nigeria Advanced Party.
01:50 Again, you should be able to state the performance
01:53 or achievement of Nigeria Advanced Party.
01:56 Now, let us look at the formation
01:58 or origin of People's Redemption Party.
02:02 How was this party formed?
02:04 Let us see, with the formation of the National Movement,
02:08 which eventually became the NPN,
02:11 Nigerian National Party of Nigeria.
02:15 This political party came up as National Movement.
02:19 So before the formation of the NPN,
02:22 a group of radical socialists emerged in Northern States,
02:27 strongly opposed to the conservative National Movement.
02:32 So this radical socialist came up
02:35 from National Movement that led to the formation of NPN.
02:40 These were the people that formed this PRP,
02:45 People's Redemption Party.
02:47 This group of people included the public servants,
02:50 like Abu Bakrimi and Balarebe Musa,
02:55 as well as university lecturers,
02:58 such as A.D. Haja, Bola, Bola, Usman, and Lakobalogu
03:03 at the Ahmadu Bello University's area.
03:06 The group lacked recognized leader
03:10 when Aminu Kanu,
03:12 wore out with the National Movement.
03:14 At that time, Aminu Kanu,
03:16 wore out with the National Movement.
03:18 So he was welcomed as the leader of People's Redemption Party.
03:23 Meaning that when he wore out with the National Movement,
03:27 that led to NPN,
03:29 he now became the leader of People's Redemption Party.
03:35 Samuelu Koku, who came with him
03:39 from the National Movement,
03:40 became the National Secretary of the Party.
03:44 Now, this is the organizational structure.
03:46 How was this party, People's Redemption Party?
03:49 How was this structure?
03:51 Let us see.
03:52 The party had several organs.
03:54 It had several organs.
03:56 The National Directorate was composed of National Officers,
04:01 Chairman of State Directorate,
04:04 the party parliamentary leader in each state assembly.
04:09 The Senate, the House of Representatives,
04:12 plus two other representatives
04:15 selected to represent each state in the federation,
04:19 among which there had to be three female members.
04:23 So this, we are the organizational structure
04:25 of People's Redemption Party.
04:27 All the organs of the party,
04:29 we are the National Working Committee, NWC,
04:32 which was made up of the National Officers,
04:35 and they met frequently to exercise the powers
04:38 of the National Directorates.
04:42 They had also a state directorate,
04:46 which had power to hold conferences
04:48 as which each local branch of the party was represented
04:53 by two delegates.
04:55 Now, they also had local branches.
04:59 The local branches had their own directorates
05:02 and chapters based on the grassroots,
05:04 the wards, the towns, the village, and clans.
05:09 So each register branch elected,
05:11 each local officers annually.
05:14 So these particular local branches
05:16 was the one that was closer to the people.
05:20 Closer to the people at the grassroots.
05:24 So now, let's also see the sources of finance
05:26 for People's Redemption Party,
05:28 how they got their phone to take care of,
05:32 that they used to take care of the political party.
05:35 One is a location from Federco donations,
05:38 federal electoral commission.
05:41 It was the electoral commission
05:44 that took care of the election in the second republic
05:49 between 1979 and 1983.
05:53 So this commission, from time to time,
05:56 they give allocations to political parties.
05:59 So this is one of the way they got the source, their finance.
06:03 Another one is membership fees and levies.
06:06 Members of the political party, they pay fee,
06:09 they pay levied, they levied them from time to time.
06:12 And from there, the political party, P.A.R.P,
06:15 also gets their phone.
06:18 This is the ends and objectives of People's Redemption Party,
06:22 the ends and objectives.
06:24 Would they intend to achieve if elected into power?
06:28 Number one, full national liberation.
06:32 They intend to get a full national liberation
06:35 that is economically and politically.
06:39 Unity and true democracy towards a boy and national economy.
06:44 So these People's Redemption Party,
06:48 they planned, their intention was to get a national liberation
06:53 for the economy to be liberated,
06:57 for there to be unity and people to focus in the economy
07:02 in order to boost our economy.
07:05 Another one of their aims is the equality
07:09 in the distribution of wealth and job creation.
07:12 This is another of the intention to see that there is
07:16 the equality of distribution of wealth.
07:19 That wealth was being distributed equally national-wide
07:23 and also to create job opportunities for everybody.
07:28 Another one of their aims was promotion of African culture,
07:32 tradition and social values.
07:34 They intend also to promote the culture of Africans,
07:38 the our culture, traditions and values.
07:43 Also, their aim again was to discipline the citizens,
07:48 leadership by example and focus action,
07:51 discipline the citizens in the sense that as leaders,
07:54 they should also be disciplined, they should lead by example.
07:58 Another of their aim was mass literacy
08:01 to make sure that many people attained at least
08:05 go have opportunity of going to school.
08:09 Another one is promotion of agricultural
08:12 through a national focus on helping the peasants farmers.
08:17 This was also one of their aims and objectives
08:21 to help the peasants farmers end up by giving them
08:25 materials that they need to use to boost the agricultural sector.
08:32 Let us see the achievements of people's redemption party.
08:35 What did they achieve during their time?
08:38 Number one, people's redemption party won gubernatorial election
08:43 in two states, namely Kanu and Kaduna as at that time.
08:47 Number two, it secured seven seats
08:50 in the Senate and 49 in the House of Representatives.
08:56 Again, people's redemption party controlled Kanu State House of Assembly.
09:02 The people's redemption governors abolished Harajee and Jagali Taksis,
09:07 which had been used as instruments of oppression
09:11 in several parties of the North.
09:14 This method of collecting tax was the what the Norton
09:17 has used in collecting cartotags as at that time,
09:21 even before the coming of the British.
09:23 So it was the people's redemption party that abolished these tax.
09:28 Maybe in case you see such a question in your SSC past questions,
09:34 maybe you have been asked the political party that abolished the cartotags.
09:39 Please, the answer is people's redemption party of 1979 and 1983.
09:46 Another of their achievements is in Kaduna,
09:49 the governor, Balarabe Musa, abolished cartotags again,
09:53 pro-tax and similar taxes for poorly paid workers.
09:59 Now let's all see the next party, the Nigeria Advanced Party, NAP.
10:06 To trace the origin or formation of Nigerian advanced party,
10:14 it was registered in 1978.
10:17 This party was registered by FedExo Federal Electoral Commission
10:23 for the 1979 elections.
10:25 It failed to contest election in 1979.
10:30 Why? Because it did not meet up to the expectation.
10:33 So it was later registered on 25th of May 1982
10:38 to contest election in the 1983 general elections.
10:44 So this NAP was not able to contest election in 1979.
10:50 But in 1983, after the registration of in 1982,
10:55 it contested election with the other five political parties,
11:00 the NPP, GNPP, PRP and this one.
11:07 Now, the party had changed, it had radical change as its watchword.
11:13 They believe in radical change and believe in a revolution
11:17 need to be used in order to solve Nigerian's problems.
11:21 So a legal lawyer, known as Tunji Bridgeweight,
11:24 was the founder of this political party.
11:27 He was the founder, the leader and also the presidential candidate of NAP.
11:34 They had other prominent members like Eweka,
11:39 Oye me lupé, Usman Giro, Dare, or Mobile.
11:43 Josef Sodi Rehye, Uba, Uba Muhammad,
11:48 Musa Salami, and Ruben Kutok.
11:51 These were members, prominent members of NAP.
11:55 So the party contested only 16 out of 19 states.
12:00 You know, then Nigeria was just 19 states of the federation.
12:06 So it contested 16 out of the 19 governorship seats and one new election.
12:12 So this party did not win any election at the state and federal level.
12:17 Also, it did not succeed, it had ever succeeded in raising the awareness involved
12:23 with young women and men in politics.
12:26 Organizational structure of NAP.
12:31 How was it structured? Let us see.
12:33 NAP had its national and state executive committees.
12:38 It had its national and state executives committees.
12:43 The highest body, then, was the Congress of the party,
12:47 which because of the newness of the party could not meet frequently.
12:51 So the founder, Tunji Bratwitz, was nominated as the president of the party.
12:57 So membership of the Congress was made up of delegates
13:02 from the state branches of the political party.
13:06 So let us see. The national officers also of the party,
13:10 the state chairman of the party.
13:11 This body, they were all formulated.
13:14 The body policy positions of the political party.
13:18 They had also adapt in state levels,
13:23 the local branches of the party in the local government level.
13:26 Let us see how this political party gets their sources.
13:32 Got their sources of finance.
13:34 Number one, true membership fees.
13:36 Members of the political party, they pay fee, they pay levy.
13:40 From there, they get their source of finance.
13:43 Number two, donations of members.
13:45 From time to time, maybe there is any program they have.
13:48 Sometimes donate to the party.
13:51 From there, the party got their money that they use to finance the party.
13:56 Federico allowance, Feder electoral commission.
14:00 From time to time, give them allowance.
14:02 From this, they got their money that they used to take care of the political party.
14:08 The aims and objectives of NAP, this was their intention.
14:13 What they intend to achieve if elected into power.
14:16 This party, like I said before, believed in radical change.
14:22 That in true radical change, Nigerian problem can be solved.
14:25 One of their aims was to eradicate
14:28 mosquitoes and rats across the boundaries of Nigeria.
14:32 Again, for a low cost health insurance policy for all Nigerians.
14:38 To make sure that Nigerians treat without much spending.
14:42 Again, to establish the universal electrification system
14:49 that will replace the National Electric Power Authority.
14:53 They plan to bring up universal electrification system
14:57 so that it can replace the Nepal and the problem of power can be solved or could be solved.
15:05 Another one was this must be free flow of water.
15:09 They also intend to provide free flow of water for every Nigerians.
15:14 This, we are the aims and objectives of NAP.
15:20 Another one is socialism.
15:22 That is freedom from exploitation and harassment would be applied.
15:26 They believed or they intend to bring up socialism
15:31 in the sense that there will be freedom from exploitation.
15:35 We are by because when the state controls the means of production and distribution,
15:40 there will be no exploitation for the low class.
15:45 Another one is a revolution in agriculture.
15:49 We lead to surplus food and surplus money.
15:53 They also intend to bring a revolution in agriculture receptor.
15:57 By soldering, there will be surplus food and surplus money
16:00 from food exports as well as industrialization.
16:03 Also, another aim of this party was all Nigerians
16:08 we have a health insurance policy for small fee.
16:11 Like I said before, Nigerians will be treated with a small fee
16:16 not spending a lot of money in order to take a medical treatment.
16:21 Another one is modern roads, sidewalks and compulsory accommodation
16:25 for workers who will also be provided for them
16:30 if today we are being elected into part.
16:33 Another one is pupils and students should be regarded as workers
16:37 and so will be given monthly allowance.
16:39 So this political party also intend to pay these pupils and students
16:45 from amount of money. They should be regarded as workers in the country.
16:51 From all these, let's all see the achievements or contributions of NAP.
16:59 Number one, the party did not win any electoral seat
17:04 of the legislative house in the 19 states of the federation.
17:10 It did not win any seat in the legislative house.
17:14 Number two, it did not win any seats in the national assembly.
17:18 Number three, the party did not win any electoral seat
17:24 of the legislative house in the 19 states of the federation.
17:28 It did not win any seats in the national assembly.
17:31 They had less than 10% of the total votes cast.
17:34 The presidential candidate and his running mate had the list number of votes
17:40 at the presidential election of 1983.
17:44 The party had radical youth as members and some contested for political offices.
17:50 Very large number of each candidate lost their deposits at the election.
17:56 So in a nutshell, Nigeria advanced party did not win any electoral seats
18:05 both in the local, in the state, federal, the national assembly and so on.
18:12 So they did not win any seat at all and it was a minor political party.
18:20 Now we have come to the end of today's lesson.
18:24 I would like to ask you some questions based on your...
18:29 So you can use it at least to assess yourself.
18:32 Number one, explain the origin of people's redemption party.
18:37 Number two, state five achievements of people's redemption party.
18:43 Number three, outline five objectives of Nigeria advanced party.
18:48 Four, state five, performance of Nigeria advanced party.
18:54 Thanks for watching.
18:58 My name is Mrs. Patience Okulu till next lesson.
