Solid Minerals in Nigeria

Transcript

00:00 Good day students. My name is Mr. Ife and I am your basic science instructor. Our topic

00:21 is Solid Minerals, the lesson objectives. At the end of the class, students should be

00:27 able to name five solid minerals found in Nigeria. Students should be able to mention the states

00:34 where they are found and states three uses of those solid minerals. Students should be able to

00:42 mention two uses of solid minerals. Students should be able to draw a map of Nigeria showing

00:49 distribution of those solid minerals and where they are deposited. Solid minerals. We're talking

00:59 about solid minerals that are gotten from non-living things. So solid minerals and natural

01:06 occurring chemical elements or compounds which are found in rocks and sometimes in soil.

01:16 Examples are goat, salt, thing, etc. Minerals can exist as solid or non-solid or a combination of

01:27 boots. All rocks are made up of minerals. Rocks which contain a high concentration of the

01:37 minerals of a particular metal from which it can be profitable mind is called the ore of that

01:45 metal, e.g. iron ore, copper ore, etc. Solid minerals. Solid minerals have been found

01:59 deposited in some parts of Nigeria and in chemical and commercial quantities and they are all

02:06 of valuable importance to money. Due to the importance, the failure of gold made has established

02:12 the military of solid minerals to undo these matters. Man utilizes some of these minerals in the

02:21 unnatural and crude form. With some of them have been combined with other materials, i.e. processed

02:29 to form products which are useful to man. There are about 34 mineral resources found in Nigeria

02:38 and which includes column bites, gold, zinc, diamond, limestone, tin, copper, etc.

02:46 Scientific study of minerals is called mineralogy and the scientist who studies mineralogy is called

02:56 mineralogist. Now this is a table that shows minerals their location in Nigeria and the importance

03:07 and of course the uses of these minerals. The first one we will be looking at is the limestone.

03:14 The limestone can be found in ebony states precisely on Calago. It can also be found in a wikuru

03:27 in Abelkuta and of course in Ogun State in Shagam, Shokuto, Lokodja, Upila in a dual state and of course

03:40 Asaba, Ashaka in Balji state. Now what is the importance of limestone?

03:46 It is found to be of great importance to man and the economy of the nation at large. Now what is

03:55 the uses of limestone? Number one, it is used to mix cement and concrete so that it can

04:05 help your buildings to be watered to be strong. Number two, like I've said, it is used in building houses.

04:13 Number three, it is used in the manufacture of sodium chiosocarbonytes for

04:25 and the formula is written as e2 cu. So this is very important in the manufacturing of soup.

04:33 So sodium chiosocarbonytes for is important in manufacturing soup and it is also a softening agent

04:42 in add water. Number four, part of raw materials in the production of iron.

04:54 Number two, goat. The goat is found in a leisure ocean state and Gussau in Zamfara.

05:00 The importance is that it has a great importance to man and the economy of that nation.

05:06 The uses of goat. Number one, it is used as a basis of international monitris and transaction.

05:13 So you can use to transact from one country to another as one importance of goat. Number two,

05:22 it is used for making jewelry in beautifying your neck, your hands, as a necklace and so on.

05:32 The total mineral is copper. Copper is found in benign city and also in an umbrella state.

05:41 And the use of copper when mixed with cement is produces bronze. Number two,

05:52 when mixed with bronze, it can be used to make coins. Number three, it is used in making ornaments,

05:59 pots. Number four, it is used in making electrical wires and cables. And lastly,

06:08 for making water pipes and cylinders. Another mineralized tin, tin is found in Guss,

06:16 voucher state. The uses of tin is used in coating iron as a protection against corrosion.

06:25 Number two, it is used in making tin cans for food storage. You see your milk they are stored

06:36 in the cans. That particular can is made out of tin. Sold. You can find sold in a baccalaic

06:46 in a wooden state. Along the Nigerian coast, you can see it in the sea waters. You can also find it

06:56 in benign state. Now what is the importance of salt? Number one, it serves as dietary purpose.

07:06 Number two, dietary purpose, it means you can add it to your food ingredient. Number two,

07:13 it is used for food preservation. When you have fish, you can use the salt to preserve the fish.

07:22 It's going to save it from microorganisms. Number three, it is used in the manufacture of

07:27 all the importance products. And EG is sodium, chlorine, sodium hydroxide acid, bleaches,

07:35 etc. Number six, lead. Lead can be found in Ogoja in cross river state. A baccalaic

07:47 and also benure, benure river in terabas state. Now what is the importance of lead? Number one,

07:56 lead serves as a covering for underground water pipes. Where the water pipes are connected from,

08:01 lead is used as a source of covering that underground water pipes. Number two, it serves as a shielding

08:10 for X-rays. Number three, it is used in car batteries. You can see that most of the minerals

08:21 are important for men. Coal, coal is found in a new good state and also in benure state.

08:28 It is of great importance to men and the economy at large. Now what's the use of coal?

08:35 Number one, it is a source of wear for cooking and driving out to mobile. In terms of all the mobile,

08:44 it can be chemically processed to form fuel. But the one we are familiar with is the one

08:54 for firewood that we use in our locality. So it is a source of fuel. Number two,

09:02 destructive distillation of coal yields industrial products like cook, which is used in the production of

09:10 iron. And also for benzene, in making of plastics, dyes and explosives. And the last one is phenol

09:20 for making drugs and antiseptics, etc. You have seen the several minerals that are found in

09:31 some places in Nigeria. You will see here is a map of Nigeria showing all the digestive states.

09:41 And some of the minerals that are stated here have been denoted by some signs.

09:49 Such that if you look at iron ore, you will see the sign. It looks like it's square.

09:59 So you would have to fish out where that square is. Finally, here is your evaluation.

10:06 At the hand of the class, you expected to name five solid minerals found in Nigeria.

10:14 Mentioned the states where they are found, states reduces of the solid minerals,

10:22 mentioned to use these of solid minerals. Draw a map of Nigeria showing distribution of solid

10:28 minerals deposits. Thank you for watching. I am Mr. Ifec. Till next time.
