Careers and Applications in Chemistry

Transcript

00:02 Good day students.

00:15 My name is Adekunle.

00:16 I'll be teaching you the subject chemistry.

00:19 The topic is introduction to chemistry.

00:23 What is chemistry?

00:25 Chemistry is a branch of pure science

00:28 that deals with the properties, composition

00:30 and uses of matter.

00:32 What are the careers in chemistry?

00:34 There are many career parts.

00:35 A personal study chemistry can choose from.

00:38 They include teaching service, chemistry teachers,

00:42 from chemistry you can become a lecturer,

00:44 in polytechnics, in grades of education,

00:47 and in universities.

00:48 Also you can become a laboratory assistant.

00:51 The next career part is chemical engineering.

00:54 We acknowledge your physics, chemistry, and mathematics.

00:58 You can become a chemical engineer

01:00 that involves the processes of combating raw materials

01:03 into finished products.

01:05 The next career part is consumer products chemistry.

01:08 Whether they produce all the stuff we use at home,

01:13 be it toothpaste shampoo,

01:15 any other things that we basically use at home.

01:18 The next career part is water chemistry

01:21 that I involve in producing

01:23 good quality water for use at home.

01:28 Also, we have green chemistry.

01:31 Those in this field produce

01:32 a environmentally friendly product

01:34 compared to non-evalupling

01:36 environmentally friendly product.

01:40 The next is forensic chemistry.

01:42 You can see these people in the aspect of crime.

01:45 The enabled also investigate crime very well.

01:49 The next aspect, very important,

01:51 is the medical chemistry.

01:53 Those people are in the health services.

01:56 We talk about pharmacists, biochemists, chemists,

01:59 nutritionists, their teachings, doctors, nurses,

02:02 and so on.

02:04 The next aspect is petroleum and petroleum

02:07 and petrochemical industry.

02:09 Those people involve in processing, crude oil,

02:13 and its fractions.

02:15 The next also, they involve in application chemistry,

02:19 research chemists, chemical engineers,

02:21 and their lives, which also includes laboratory assistants.

02:25 The next career part is manufacturing industry.

02:29 These people are the researchers and chemical engineers.

02:33 They also involve in manufacturing produce

02:35 like steel and ironworks.

02:37 Also, without feeling to mention,

02:40 agricultural science, physoology, forestry,

02:44 food technologies, and research chemistry.

02:46 The next soft topic we look into

02:50 is application of chemistry.

02:52 The knowledge of chemistry is used

02:54 in the production of our basic needs and improvements

02:56 in the quality of our lives, what are these areas.

02:59 The first one we mention is food production and preservation.

03:03 These people involve the production of fertilizers

03:06 in pesticides and food preservatives

03:08 that we use in majorly in our farms.

03:12 The next is medicine.

03:14 The production of drugs and various medical services

03:17 as a result of what chemistry.

03:19 The next application of chemistry is in the military

03:21 and space science.

03:23 In the military, we talk about the production of our munitions

03:25 like Gompowder and the species asks you

03:28 continue the story of chemistry.

03:29 You get to understand this.

03:31 Also, space science that involve the production of species

03:34 rocket by virtue of the knowledge of chemistry.

03:37 The next aspect is transportation.

03:39 All your firsts, you use transportation.

03:42 You use it in transportation.

03:44 The next is also production of cement,

03:46 concrete, steel, bricks, and ties,

03:49 which are used in constructing our houses.

03:54 The next is clothing.

03:56 The clothes you wear are tester industries,

03:59 mixtures of the knowledge of chemistry.

04:01 There is nothing that has a good aspect,

04:03 has a good part without having a bad part.

04:06 What I was talking about next is adverse effect of chemistry.

04:10 Those are the negative things we can bring

04:13 from the knowledge of chemistry,

04:15 which I do encourage you to look into these.

04:18 But we still have to talk about it.

04:20 What are these adverse effects?

04:21 The first one is pollution.

04:23 That version of the chemistry,

04:25 we discover so many things that the product

04:29 from chemistry caused in our environment.

04:31 And that is one of it is chemical waste,

04:34 the oil spillage, the radioactive waste.

04:36 The next we look at is drug abuse,

04:38 as we keep hearing in our news of recent

04:42 and even in time pass.

04:44 We talk about additive drugs like cocaine,

04:46 heroin, and more things.

04:47 These are products of chemistry also.

04:50 The next we look at is corrosion,

04:52 corrosion of materials are like roasting of iron.

04:56 By version of the addition of water and oxygen

04:58 to all these materials is corrosion them.

05:01 The last aspect we talk about is poisoning.

05:04 All the chemicals used for poisoning are actually

05:08 as result of the knowledge of chemistry,

05:10 or the application of heat.

05:13 The last but not the least is scientific method.

05:18 As a good chemist, as a scientist,

05:21 how do we agree about our researches?

05:23 How do we come about theories and laws?

05:26 These are the things we talk about on that segment.

05:29 The various steps we take are scientists to solve problems.

05:32 And the first step we are like to mention is observation.

05:36 What is observation?

05:37 The use of our senses to look at our environment.

05:40 And see, oh, this is how things are going.

05:43 Hope this is what I observe.

05:44 As a good scientist, you observe.

05:46 And the next thing you do after your observation

05:48 is you create an hypothesis.

05:50 And this is statement which may not be universally true.

05:53 Or what do you do?

05:54 By virtue of your observation,

05:55 you look at how some patterns are going about.

05:59 And then you try to form a basis.

06:01 And after that, you move to experiment.

06:03 You don't carry out an experiment on that.

06:05 To check whether what you have observed

06:08 and create an hypothesis on is actually true or not.

06:11 If you check, you also need to double check

06:14 by continuing your experiments.

06:16 That is under further experiments.

06:18 Your camera for the experiments

06:19 and allows other scientists to test your hypotheses.

06:23 After they have done a good job on that,

06:26 we created theory within the limit of our available evidence.

06:31 And if our hypothesis is well done,

06:35 then we had to modify it or discard it if it's not,

06:39 if it doesn't qualify.

06:41 Lastly, we go into our law.

06:45 Scientific theory becomes a law.

06:47 After it has been tested and proven true,

06:49 without any exception.

06:50 We can see from here that scientists are not ordinary people.

06:54 They work very well to create a law.

06:57 So any law in science is most times authentic.

07:02 And with this class, I believe I can also test you.

07:06 These are the evaluations.

07:07 Number one, make sure five carriers

07:09 that require the knowledge of chemistry.

07:11 Number two, least five carriers

07:14 that do not require the knowledge of chemistry.

07:17 Number three, state scientific methods

07:19 from the first to the last.

07:20 I believe you know them.

07:21 The next one is state five applications of chemistry.

07:24 I also believe you know that too.

07:25 Describe four adverse effects of chemistry.

07:30 Thank you for watching.

07:32 My name is Adi Kulin, see you next class.
